MIRI: The bumpy stretches along the Kuala Baram road after the Asean Bridge leading to the Industrial Training Institute ( ILP) Miri, will be resurfaced to facilitate comfortable travel including for tourists from neighbouring Brunei.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the Sarawak government has allocated a total of RM484,231 for the project.

“Works started last Monday to resurface the first part of the bumpy road. We have identified seven spots along this stretch of the road to be resurfaced and works are scheduled for completion by this week,” he told reporters during a site visit yesterday.

Among those accompanying him was Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak assistant divisional engineer Stephen Ung.

According to Lee, his office had received numerous complaints from the public on the poor condition of the road.

“Some of the complaints were from Bruneians. There were also road users who sustained injuries in minor accidents while driving along the bumpy stretches.

“Now that we have the funds, works can proceed. We are (also) getting more funds to resurface several stretches on the other side of the road from Miri leading to the border with Brunei,” he added.

On the accident-prone stretch at the junction of Miri Airport, Lee said a traffic light will be installed there soon before the end of this year.
