Kuching golfer lifts Merdeka Cup in Sibu

SIBU: Unheralded Aziel Teo won the coveted Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud’s Challenge Trophy at the two- day 32nd Merdeka Cup Golf Tournament held at Sibu Golf Course last weekend.

The 19-year- old from Kelab Golf Kuching ( KGS) fired a 140 to beat his nearest challenger Aw Yong, also on 140.

A total of 80 gol fers from throughout Sarawak took part in the championsh­ip organised by Sibu Golf Club (SGC) to mark the 61st Merdeka Day.

Speaking at the prize- giving c e r emony, S a r awa k G ol f Associatio­n (SGA) president Hoan Kee Hock said the annual event has become a premier tournament in the Sarawak golf calendar.

He revealed that SGC was chosen to host this year’s event because of the club’s role in advancing golf in the state and the suitabilit­y of the Sibu Golf course.

Meanwhile, Albert Goh of Kelab Golf Bintulu was the only one to score a hole-in- one on the second day of the competitio­n.

Goh, 42, who said it was his first ever hole-in- one after 12 years playing golf, won a set of PXG GEN Iron Set.

Players who finished just behind Teo and Aw Yong were Malcom Ting, Lee Ka Tung, Wong Tung Ann, Anson Yeo, Lau Ching Leong, Steven Hii and Lee Ka Tiong.

Top nett finishers were Matthew Ong, Mohd Lokman, Matthew Ha, Wong Lay Nam, Benjamin Ethan and Roland Ha.
