Keep flying national flag up till Sept 16, suggests Sibu MP

SIBU: The flying of the Jalur Gemilang should not be confined to the National Day Month of August, but right through Sept 16 which marks the day Malaysia was formed.

Sibu MP Oscar Ling who suggested this said Malaysians should continue flying the national flag until Sept 16 in a show of patriotism and unity.

Speaking at the divisional-level ‘Fly the Merdeka Flag Campaign’ organised by the Information Department of Sibu and Mukah at SK Abang Ali here yesterday, he said such events help instil patriotism and foster unity among the people, particularly the youth.

“Although August is declared as the National Day Month, Malaysians have until Sept 16 to fly the national flag to show their love for the country.

“Fly your Jalur Gemilang from your offices, your business premises, or your home. You can also make this event livelier by sharing your Merdeka activities in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or your official websites,” he said.

Stating that the national flag is a symbol of sovereignty of a country, he advised that flags that are worn out be replaced with new ones, and that flags should also be correctly positioned and appropriately waved.

Among those present at the event were SK Abang Ali headmaster Hamdi Najji, Sibu District Officer Awang Yusof Awang Mostapha, as well as Sibu and Mukah Information Department officer Ivy Stephen Sekai.
