Acclaimed one-man show ‘Every Brilliant Thing’ to be staged Oct 12-13
KUCHING: The city has been chosen to be a part of ‘ Every Brilliant Thing’ – an interactive theatrical happening that unfolds as both heart-wrenching and hilarious.
Duncan Macmillan’s one-man show Every Brilliant Thing premiered in Malaysia in 2016, starring Qahar Aqilah and directed by theatrethreesixty’s artistic director Christopher Ling.
Hailed by British newspaper The Guardian as “one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression”, it is slated to be staged at the Kuching Old Courthouse for a three- show run from Oct 12-13 as part of this year’s ‘What About Kuching (WAK) 2018’.
Designed for a small intimate audience setting, Every Brilliant Thing is told from the perspective of a young boy, and delicately handles the subject of managing adult depression and suicide.
This unique concept of an interactive and immersive oneman theatre performance features a cast of one actor, with a little help from interactions with the live audience.
All proceeds from this production will be channelled to Befrienders Kuching, a nonprofit organisation with trained volunteers providing emotional support to people who are lonely, distressed, in despair, and having suicidal thoughts.
“Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts are not to be treated lightly, but yet people avoid engaging in these uncomfortable, difficult but ultimately necessary conversations about their mental health,” said co- organiser Laura Kho.
Her co- organiser Poh SzeLyn added that with theatre as a medium, they hope that the audience will be able to approach the important issue of depression with an open mind, while appreciating an alternative form of artistic expression.
