Indian duo jailed for drug offences, to be deported after serving sentence

MIRI: Two Indian nationals involved in separate drug cases were sentenced to five and seven months in prison respective­ly by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

For the first case, Naharuddin Mokhtar pleaded guilty to abusing drugs under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and was liable to be jailed for up to two years or fined up to RM5,000.

He was arrested at 2.05pm on June 7 this year at the district Narcotics Crime Investigat­ion Division office here after testing positive for methamphet­amine.

The court ordered the sentence to start from the date of his arrest.

Meanwhile, the second case also saw Sukraj Singh pleading guilty under Section 12( 2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 to drug possession.

He was arrested around noon on July 1 this year in front of a launderett­e at Block 9 MCLD here after being found in possession of 0.04 grammes of methamphet­amine.

His seven- month is to begin from the date of his arrest.

The court also ordered both men to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department for deportatio­n upon completion of their respective sentence.

Naharuddin’s and Sukraj’s case was prosecuted by Insp Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor and ASP Mary Ong respective­ly, in front of Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa.
