We can do it, CM tells Sukma-bound athletes

The S’wak govt will allocate more funds for the devt of sports in the state

KUCHING: The Sarawak Government will allocate more funds for the development of sports in the state including upgrading and building more sports facilities.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who said this at the Sukma XIX Contingent state presentation ceremony at a local hotel yesterday, added that athletes who perform well in Perak will be sent overseas for training.

“Your performance in this Sukma XIX will be our benchmark, to see where are we. I and the state cabinet members will source for the funds to send you for training.

“If you bring back more gold medals, I will dig more “gold” for sports. Be ready to compete with high fighting spirit. We can do it,” he said, adding that he was very impressed with the high motivation and spirit displayed by the athletes.

“I would like to thank the minister (Datuk Abdul Karim), chef-de-mission (Datuk Snowdan Lawan), assistants chef-demission and all those who have helped prepare our athletes for Sukma XIX.

“I also wish you all the best in your challenge in Perak and do Sarawak proud,” said Johari.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datul Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Sukma XIX Contingent chef-de-mission Datuk Snowdan Lawan, assistants chef-de-mission and Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee.
