MACC denies probe on former assemblyman politically motivated

-

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has refuted allegations by irresponsible groups that the MACC investigation of a former assemblyman recently was politically motivated.

The MACC said in a statement yesterday that the accusation was considered to be excessive and wild which damaged its image and reputation.

“It is emphasised that the MACC always adopts a professional attitude in any initiative particularly when carrying out investigation on corruption without involving any political tendency.

“Any detention made by the MACC aims to carry out investigation based on concrete evidence and not politically motivated,”it said.

The statement said the MACC always followed the existing law and national regulations when carrying out investigation including on the detention and rights of an individual in the lockup. It added that the MACC was always committed in discharging its duties in a transparent, independent and professional manner without favouring any individual or organisation.

As such, the MACC advised members of the public against spreading unconfirmed news using the name of the commission because such action would affect the MACC’s image and efforts to rid the country of corruption, misappropriation and power abuse.

On Sept 3, the MACC detained a former Selangor assemblyman from PAS to assist in an investigation on power abuse involving more than RM50,000.

The former assemblyman was alleged to have appointed a company as the supplier for the Community Programme for a Service Centre of the State Legislative Assembly where the company concerned was owned by the assemblyman’s son from around 2015 to 2018. — Bernama
