SAMARAHAN: SJK Chung Hua Sungai Jernang received a grant of RM500,000 for its new building from the Sarawak government yesterday.

Stakan assemblyman Dato Sri Muhammad Ali Mahmud handed over the cheque to New Building Committee chairman Penghulu Chai Hen Hui in a simple ceremony at the school.

In his speech, Muhammad Ali said that SJK Chung Hua Sungai Jernang has a student and staff population of nearly 600, with more than half of them Bumiputeras.

“This school is one of the earliest in this area. With support of local community, it grew and is now well known in Samarahan.”

The strong Bumiputera population is encouraging because such integration among students could only lead to harmony.

“At the federal level, we hope they will take notice of rural schools and their needs. Many schools are dilapidated and lacking facilities,” said Muhammad Ali.

Chai who also spoke at the function lauded local businesses and individuals who supported the project by sponsoring building materials and donating cash.

The school has raised RM2 million for the project and still needs RM3 million to complete it.

“We are in our second phase of building. We hope that local businessmen will help us with our shortage of funds so we can complete it as soon as possible,” Chai said.
