“I am confident of their abilities are our Miri team was the champion in the inter-zone Silat President Cup held in Sibu last year,” RSS Miri chairman Ismawi Kedri told thesundaypost.

He revealed that the six have undergone integrated training and also exposure at various competitions including some in Peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan reiterated when he opened the Sukma XIX Athletes Camp at Pueh Youth Camp that the state contingent is determined to become the overall champions in Sukma XIX in Perak.

It has been 24 years since Sarawak was overall champion for three consecutive times in 1990, 1992 and 1994.

In the last edition held in Kuching in 2016, Sarawak was runner-up after finishing behind Selangor by three gold medals.

Incentives for the Sukma-bound athletes are RM5,000 for the first gold, RM7,000 for the second and RM7,000 for each subsequent gold. Silver ans bronze medalists will received RM750 and RM500 respectively.

Gold medalists who remain eligible for the next Sukma in 2020 will receive a one-off equipment allowance of RM500 and a monthly allowance of RM400 while the silver and bronze medalists shall receive monthly allowances of RM300 and RM200.

A 77-gold target has been set for the Sarawak athletes which is believed to be adequate for them to carry home the overall title.
