Kuching pips Mukah in Bintulu football tourney

BINTULU: Kuching Novice edged Mukah My Team 3- 2 in extra time to lift the YB Dato Sri Dr Stephen Undi Utom Cup at the Bintulu Division Rural Football Championsh­ip final on Monday.

Playing at the Bintulu Stadium and a goal behind in the first half Mohd Azizul Annuar equalised before Wan Badzreen Wan Yusof netted two goals in extra time.

Murum FC clinched third place while Akademi Kemena Bintulu was fourth. Wan Badzreen also won the tournament top scorer award with 12 goals. ‘Best Player’ in the final game was Daniel Elfina. Samalaju assemblyma­n Majang Renggi gave away the prizes.

A total of eight teams from Bintulu, Murum, Samalaju and Sebauh vied for the honours.

The other teams were PP MSN Bintulu, Samalaju FC, Segan Boy FC and Boy FC.

The tournament, which was organised by Bintulu Football Associatio­n (Bifa) in collaborat­ion with Sarawak Energy Berhad, Lea Sports Centre and Sarawak Sports Council, was aimed at developing interest in the sport among youths and uncovering new talents.

Bifa president Duke Janteng revealed that the second edition of the tournament involved over 1,000 youths and 300 players since it kicked off on April 14.

He also said the first edition produced 13 promising young players for the state.
