Over 50 taxi drivers attend defensive driving workshop
BINTULU: Shell MDS Malaysia held a defensive driving technique workshop for over 50 taxi drivers here under its # ShellSelamatSampai community outreach initiative yesterday.
The aim was to deliver positive social outcomes, and building strong and lasting relationships with stakeholders and the community. Organised jointly with Bintulu Resident Office and Bintulu Road Safety Council, the workshop was held at Parkcity Everly Hotel here.
The taxi drivers took part in defensive driving technique, and anger and fatigue management, aimed at refreshing them on road safety, customer care, and adopting the right driving attitude.
Side activities included an exhibition and talk by Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Sarawak ( LPKP), Bintulu Development Authority, Road Safety Council, Road Safety Department, Road Transport Department, and police.
Following the workshop, the taxi drivers would be monitored by LPKP and Bintulu Resident Office, for a six-month evaluation process. The evaluation is helpful for the renewal of their (drivers) licence.
“Safety is always our priority at Shell MDS Malaysia. We believe in sharing our safety culture with the community. We have extended our road safety advocacy to taxi drivers here to ensure that the local community benefit from this safety intervention,” said Shell MDS Malaysia general manager Tom Wong.
Shell MDS Malaysia, which started in 1993, celebrated its 25th anniversary recently. Besides the defensive driving technique workshop for taxi drivers, there were also other programmes under the # ShellSelamatSampai flagship.
One of them is the # ShellSelamatSampai School Challenge. Under this initiative, 20 secondary schools nationwide compete annually to implement road safety intervention projects that would benefit the school and the surrounding communities.
“SMK Bintulu and SMK Kidurong are two schools here that have emerged as national champions in the # ShellSelamatSampai School Challenge for the past two years (2016 and 2017),” Wong said.
The # ShellSelamatSampai was set up in 2016 to comprehensively promote road safety awareness and behavioural change among motorcyclists in particular, who contribute to the highest road fatality rate in Malaysia.
Deputy police chief DSP Jame Reis, representing Bintulu police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili was also present at the event.
