Adventure-seekers can visit the less-explored and unspoiled areas in Sarawak while locals can take the opportunity to develop homestay and other tourism-related products and services.

SIBU: Sibu Town Square Phase II is currently hosting the 3rd Sarawak 4x4 Jamboree as well as a 12- day carnival.

“Adventure- seekers can visit the less- explored and unspoiled areas in Sarawak while locals can take the opportunity to develop homestay and other tourism-related products and services,” Sibu Resident Charles Siaw said at a welcoming dinner for the participants here on Wednesday.

He said Sarawak, particularly places surrounding Sibu, has much to offer to the adventurous with rich flora and fauna, as well as the unique culture and tradition of the local communities.

He pointed out that the influx of travellers and visitors could promote traditional arts and crafts.

“Instead of letting old skills like

beading, weaving and carving die out, locals can now make these items for sale to tourists, keeping the tradition alive while supplementing their incomes,” he added.

The jamboree is organised by 4x4 Travel & Adventure Club Sarawak (Sakta).

Meanwhile, Siaw said in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of Sibu International BASE Jump, the Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Group spearheaded by Sibu Resident’s Office has organised a 12- day carnival, which began on Wednesday and ends on Sept 23.

“We have extreme competitions like skateboarding competition, food eating challenge, cooking competition and strongman championship.

“We also have family-friendly events such as a colouring contest, night ride (cycling) and a telematch,” he disclosed.

There will also be kiteflying competition, multiracial traditional performances, makeup show, singing competition, martial arts performance and line dancing, while a wide array of local delicacies and products will also be available for sale.

Several campaigns and exhibitions are also slated to be held during the carnival, such as a ‘ Say No To Rabies’ awareness campaign to be launched on Sept 15 at 7pm, along with an exhibition on rabies, dengue fever and Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease ( HFMD) by the Department of Veterinary Services and Sibu Divisional Health Department.

The Civil Defence Force (APM), National Anti- Drug Agency (AADK) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) will also be holding their respective exhibitions, while the Election Commission ( EC) will be running a mobile registration counter on Sept 17.
