Flying Dayak Miri Sports Club is determined to blaze the trail
MIRI: Flying Dayak Miri Sports Club or FD aspires to produce top athletes to continue the legacy of former top national sprinter Watson Nyambek, the ‘Flying Dayak.’
Its publicity officer Edmund Harry said their poor performance at the recent 14th Sibu Open Track and Field Championship did not dampen their spirit
He admitted to some anxiety following the performance of their 22 athletes in Sibu last week.
But they did deliver one gold and one bronze from the 18 events they competed in and remain determined to come back stronger next year, Harry told thesundaypost.
Darryn Radin Lubak won the High Jump (open category) with a height of 1.85m while Nicklane Akau Arik, Alexius Joel Kalon, Josiah Isaac Jakop and Mcmeilson Fernandez Mos collected the bronze in the 4x100m relay.
FD was established in 2013 through the initiative of Fellizia Michael, Watson’s wife, with the aim to promote interest in the sport and develop young talent.
Watson held the national record of 10.30sec in the 100m for 18 years until Melaka’s Khairul Hafiz Jantan broke it with a new standard of 10.18s at the 2016 Sukma in Kuching.
He, Fellizia and several others are the club coaches.
Among the most decorated athletes who had trained under the FD programme is Jonathan Nyepa, a top national sprinter who reached the semi-final of the 100m in the recent Asian Games.
Another of their charges Alexius Joel is currently representing Sarawak in the Perak Sukma.
