KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has assured that the Sarawak government will continue to implement development programmes in the state.

He gave this guarantee in his message for the state-level Malaysia Day celebration at the Dewan Santapan, New State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) Complex here on Sunday.

“I believe that Sarawakians born before 1963 who are still with us can bear witness to the developmental stages in Sarawak that have transformed it from an under- developed state to one that is developing rapidly and steadily from its social and political aspects.

“I want to assure that the existing Sarawak government will continue to implement development programmes so that citizens can enjoy better standard of living, especially in the rural areas,” he added.

Representing all the people of Sarawak, the Chief Minister said he welcomed the federal government’s decision to continue implementing infrastructure projects in Sarawak, especially the Pan Borneo Highway project which will facilitate the movement of people while catalysing the opening of more areas for development along its route.

This year, Kuching was chosen as the venue for the state-level celebration to commemorate the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963.

The moderate but meaningful celebration was attended by the Yang DiPertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, Abang Johari and his wife Datin Patinggi Dato Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, state cabinet ministers, state and community leaders, heads of departments and about 500 other guests.

The evening event started with an opening ceremony featuring a short sketch on the history of Malaysia Day, followed by the symbolic launch by Head of State and cake- cutting ceremony.
