MIRI: Members of the village security and development committee (JKKK) Piasau Jaya, Pertubuhan Amal Kebajikan Islam Piasau, Miri (Amal) and other local non- governmental organisations (NGOs) held a work party (gotong royong) to upgrade an empty area near the Sungai Baong Muslim cemetery here to be used as parking space.

JKKK Piasau Jaya Phase III Ketua Kaum Abdul Rahman Adon said all this while, Muslims who visited their loved ones buried at the cemetery have to park at the narrow roadside because of limited parking spaces.

“JKKK Piasau Jaya together with Amal and assisted by the NGOs conducted a gotong-royong to cut down tall trees and laid sand and gravel so that visitors to the graveyard can park their vehicles,” Abdul Rahman said to The Borneo Post recently.

Also taking part in the gotongroyong activity was Amal chairman Zainuddin Sapong.

According to Abdul Rahman, the area will be used for parking lots. The work party managed to clear away unwanted items, and cutting down tall trees using chainsaws and an excavator.

“We hope the ample parking space will help to overcome the problem faced by Muslims when visiting their loved ones buried at the Sungai Baong cemetery,” he said while thanking all those involved in the gotong-royong activity.

Miri City Council also assisted by providing a lorry to carry away the unwanted items including chopped tree trunks and branches.
