Over 200 dogs vaccinated over the weekend

KAPIT: Over 200 dogs from this district and from Song District were vaccinated during a free rabies vaccinatio­n programme on Sept 14-15, organised by Sarawak Veterinary Service Department at the lobby of the State Complex in Jalan Bleteh here.

On the first day, 87 dogs belonginin­g to 52 people (pet owners) from this district were vaccinated. On the second day, 140 dogs belonging to 100 people were vaccinated.

Leading the vaccinatio­n team was an officer from the Veterinary Services Department here, Ricky Jameson, who was assisted by two officers.

Witnessing the vaccinatio­n programme and giving a talk on rabies to the pet owners on the final day was Dr Cheong Yaw Liang who heads the public health division of the Ministry of Local Government and Housing.

Kapit District Council secretary Jabang Juntan, SAOs Wee Teck Min, and Grace Anyie, and senior assistant environmen­tal health officer Favian Masing were also on hand to give their moral support.

On a related event, the health section of Kapit District Council together with Veterinary Services Department here have carried out a dog destructio­n campaign during the same period to prevent the spread of rabies. Among areas they went to were downtown Kapit, villages along Jalan Bletih and Kpg Baru, and Jalan Airport.

They managed to destroy 13 stray dogs.
