Mosque, surau committees urged to be driving force

LIMBANG: Committee members of mosques and suraus appointed by the government play a driving force role in nurturing religious values and making the Quran a guide in their daily life.

Assistant Minister of Agricultur­e Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said religious education based on Quranic teaching, including the learning of ‘ fiqh’, ‘ tajwid’ and other Islamic norms should be carried out in mosques and suraus.

“Nurturing Islamic studies and understand­ing the teaching of the Quran is not merely to produce more qari and qariah, but also to enhance the status of Islam,” he said at the Quran recital competitio­n, involving 10 villages in Kampung Bakul here on Monday evening.

Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah, Limbang Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) officer Awang Abdul Rahim Awang Rosely, organising chairman Tamin Sitam, Penghulu Yusop Dollah and headman of Kampung Bakul Kassim Adam were also present.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Bukit Kota assemblyma­n, said Muslims in Sarawak were very fortunate to have various facilities and options to study the Quran.

“In fact, the government has built and upgraded many facilities at mosques and suraus in Sarawak to enable Muslims to carry out their religious obligation­s.

Meanwhile, a total of 103 people participat­ed in the competitio­n, which was divided into adult, senior and open categories for Quran recital, children memorisati­on competitio­n, and adult and children Azan competitio­n.

At the function, Dr Abdul Rahman announced a government grant of RM15,000 to upgrade the hall at Kampung Bakul.
