KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah ( UMS) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) to develop a Disaster Recovery Centre ( DRC) through a reciprocal approach.

Tying up with the Centre for ICT Services and the IT Department of UMS, this would allow both universities to recover critical IT services and maintain business continuity should disaster befall either of them.

The MoU document was signed by Unimas Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin.

In his welcoming speech, Kadim said the collaboration between IT professionals of the two universities would help to elevate the level of expertise among them with emphasis on the Disaster Recovery Centre (DRC).

The DRC is a critical requirement for any organisation to guarantee the high availability of IT services.

He disclosed that the idea for a reciprocal approach among universities was the result of a roundtable session between the Ministry of Education, Public Universities chief information officer ( CIO) and the Majlis Pengarah ICT IPTA MAPITA) conducted on October 20 to 22 last year.

Subsequently, Unimas and UMS held discussions to pursue the matter.

creating a reciprocal approach like network system, utilities, minor maintenance, connectivity, safety and physical access,” he said.

The signing of the MOU will help both universities to create new breed of trans-boundary working culture that will contribute to innovation and knowledge creation among the IT professionals.

In his speech, Kamarudin said that this reciprocal approach will allow UMS to develop their DRC without incurring increase in cost of operations.

“We hope for further cooperation between Unimas and UMS as we are public universities located on Borneo Island. This can make us the catalyst in DRC services for other agencies here,” he said.

Also present at the event were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Dr Fasihuddin Badruddin Ahmad, Deputy Vice Chancellor ( Research and Innovation) Prof Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman, all from Unimas.
