Relocation of Miri fish market awaiting planning authority’s green light
MIRI: The relocation of the fish market at Miri town area to a new location in Miri ParkCity commercial area is awaiting approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA).
Miri City councillor Abdullah Jaini explained this during the MCC full council meeting yesterday.
“The relocation of the fish market to its new premises is still awaiting SPA’s approval.
“Once the developer obtains the SPA approval, the Miri City Council ( MCC) will work closely with the developer in order to ensure the relocation of the traders to the new premises will run smoothly,” he said when explaining the relocation of the market.
During the meeting, Cr Keith Chin expressed concern on the dirty monsoon drain behind the fish market.
Chin said the drain was frequently blocked by rubbish particularly plastic wastes which would cause flash flood in the surrounding area during heavy downpour.
Thus, he wanted MCC to take stern action again such irresponsible act that could cause environmental issues such as pollution.
Mayor Adam Yii explained that maintenance of the monsoon drain is under the jurisdiction of Miri Marina ParkCity’s developer.
Even so, Yii said the MCC will write to the developer and request them to clean the drain at least once a week. MCC will assist the developer by providing service to dump the rubbish collected from the drain.
In addition MCC will also make arrangement for grass cutting service behind the fish market in order to keep the area clean and neat.
Earlier, he presented certificate of appreciation to Boulevard Hypermarket & Departmental Store Sdn Bhd for their initiative in replacing plastic with ecobag for its customers’ shopping purpose.
He praised Boulevard Hypermarket & Departmental Store Sdn Bhd for supporting the city council’s effort in reducing the usage of plastic bags for environmental safety.
Also present were Miri deputy mayor Cr Julaihi Mohd and MCC’s secretary Morshidi Fredrick.
