SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King called on his councilors to continue to work hard now that the state cabinet has extended their service until Dec 31.

“It is known that SMC councillors are assigned to 30 different zones covering SMC’s area of jurisdiction. The list of the zones with their contact numbers have been published in the newspapers and uploaded to SMC’s website.

“To keep themselves updated, the councillors have joined the WhatsApp group for them to monitor issues on the ground and also convey complaints and requests from the public,” he said in his address at the full council meeting which was read out by his deputy, Rogayah Jamain.

Tiong was satisfied that the councillors had been carrying out their duties diligently in resolving urgent matters such as potholes, fallen trees, faulty street lighting, litters, illegal parking, clogged drains and so on that were brought up to them by the public.

Tiong, however, said some requests such as upgrading of sinking road, reconstruction of sinking drains that required funding may have to take some time to respond as the council has to set priorities in view of fund constraint.

Meanwhile, he said that the council had not received any report of rabies cases in its area so far.

He said the council’s dog catching team had caught a total of 1,048 dogs from January until Sept 19 this year.
