Over 300 students for 27th Sarawak Wushu C’ship
KUCHING: More than 30 0 students from 15 primary and secondary schools from Kuching, Sibu and Miri are expected to compete in the 27th Sarawak Wushu Championship at SJK Chung Hua No.4 from Oct 12 to 14.
With entries already exceeding 300 as at yesterday, tournament director Ling Ung Hee is optimistic that more will submit their entries before the closing date on Sept 30.
T he annual state meet is jointly organised by Kelab Wushu Bandar Kuching and the Wushu Federation of Sarawak with the support of Sarawak State Sports Council and Sarawak Education Department.
“We are pleased and honoured to host this meet which is primarily aimed to unearth potential talents to be groomed for Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) 2020 and beyond,” Ling said.
Among other objectives, the championship shall serve as a platform for the students to showcase their skills and gauge their standard while promoting ties among participants, coaches, teachers and parents.
According to Ling, many students were unable to participate as they are sitting for their PT3, SPM and STPM.
The championship is divided into Open, Taolu (10 events), Optional (10 events) and Traditional (10 events).
Winners, apart from receiving medals, will also get mini mascots in the form of Stitch, a Disney character.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is big supporter of wushu, has been invited to officiate the opening ceremony.
“I would also like to thank SJK Chung Hua No. 4 headmaster Chai Hon Mun for providing free usage of the school hall as the competition venue, Chan Chee Ghim for helping to transport the carpet and all others who have kindly contributed in cash or kind to help make the championship a success,” said Ling.
The organising chairman is Lo Chan Yin, secretary Tay Soon Joo while the organising committee members are Alfred Wan Weng Yeat, Jason Yu Hung Ming, Benny Chong Thian Nyen, Jacqueline Yeo Chiew Lang, Alvin Jong and Alex Chai Chee Shin.
