Man allegedly disguised as welfare staff steals charity box

-

MIRI: The police are tracking a man allegedly disguised as a staff of a welfare organisation who stole a charity box from a restaurant in Bandar Baru Permyjaya on Tuesday ( Sep 25).

He informed the restaurant manager that he was instructed to collect the box and would bring it back.

The manager of a welfare association lodged a police report at Miri Central Police Station on Wednesday after receiving a call of the incident from the restaurant manager around noon.

“The restaurant manager said the donation box was collected from the restaurant by a male staff on Sep 25 around 8.32am, and he waited for the box to be returned.

“I told him that I did not instruct any of my staff to collect any charity box on that date. I immediately went to his premises to get evidence of the incident and look at CCTV footage to make sure that man was my staff. It turned out that the man shown in the CCTV footage was not our staff,” said the complainant.

Following the incident, the complainant said she checked on several coffee shops and eateries around Permyjaya and found similar incidents happened at two other premises.

A police report was lodged to investigate those responsible and prevent similar incidents from re- occurring as well as for administrative reference of the welfare organisation. Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed the case and said it is still under investigation.
