Project to be tendered out next year
MIRI: The project to build a 200-metre wave breaker costing RM25 million at Jalan Batu Satu Lutong will be tendered out next year and is expected to be completed in one and a half year.
Though the design is ready the project is still waiting for the technical concept before it can be tendered out, said Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar.
“We understand the problem faced by fishermen as the sea is encroaching into the land,” Dr Xavier told members of the press when visiting the site of the proposed project yesterday.
Accompanying him were Miri MP Dr Michael Teo, Department of Drainage and Irrigation ( DID) Sarawak director Chok Moi Soon and DID Miri divisional engineer Hidayati Ismail.
He said with the sea flooding the area every now and then, a 200-metre waver breaker
We understand the problem faced by fishermen as the sea is encroaching into the land.
with a large structure into the sea is the best solution so that fishermen can berth their boats easily by attaching them to the structure.
Dr Xavier also said the wave breaker will then prevent waves and water coming inside the landing zone.
The wave breaker will benefit about 200 families involved in the fishing industry in the area.
Dr Xavier was shown photographs of occurrences of waves breaking into the shore during high tide early this year and last year by a fisherman, which caused the villagers to suffer losses as their boats and fishing gear were swept into the sea by the huge tides.
