Darul Hana Bridge, Fort Margherita to light up in red for World Heart Day

KUCHING: Darul Hana Bridge and Fort Margherita will light up in red as Sarawak joins the rest of the world in celebratin­g World Heart Day 2018 tomorrow.

The inaugural event organised by Sarawak Heart Foundation with the cooperatio­n of Commission of the City of Kuching North and Sarawak Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n aims to raise awareness of the number one killer – cardiovasc­ular disease said a press statement from the foundation.

The light- up will be featured in the website of World Heart Federation which includes the foundation among its 200 member organisati­ons worldwide.

Darul Hana has been lit up since the launching of World Heart Day 2018 by the foundation’s chairman and Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at Saradise on Sept 23.

Kuala Lumpur Tower, Table Mountain in South Africa, Jet d’Eau in Geneva, Sky Tower in New Zealand and the Gate of the Orient in China are among those lighting up in red for the heart.

World Heart Day is celebrated every Sept 29 as the world’s biggest platform for raising awareness of cardiovasc­ular disease, including heart disease and stroke.

The theme for this year’s is ‘ My Heart, Your Heart’. It is about saying to ourselves, the people we care about and individual­s all around the world on what can you do right now to look after your heart.

The foundation was set up in 1996 as a charity to promote a heart- healthy community in Sarawak. Core activities include providing financial assistance to poor heart patients in Sarawak seeking treatment in Malaysia, public health exhibition­s, health talks and free health screenings.

Besides sponsoring medical treatment for the recuperati­on and rehabilita­tion of heart patients in public hospitals in Sarawak, the foundation also provides grants and sponsorshi­ps to hospitals, institutio­ns of higher learning and profession­als in the medical field to carry out research on heart- related diseases.
