Include local contents for History subject — Lukanisman

-

MIRI: Local contents on respective areas should be included in the school syllabus for History subject to enable the students to know better the history and the background of the places they reside in.

Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni when proposing this said: “If you look at the school’s History book, there is a lack of and even none has been touched on the local history content.

“While learning and acquiring knowledge on other people’s history, it will be good for the students to have a better understanding of their own places such as Miri where the country’s first oil well for the gas and oil industry was established,” he said.

He pointed this out when officiating at the prize presentation for the northern region Inter- Secondary Schools Local Culture Heritage Competition at Pustaka Miri here yesterday.

In this regard, Lukanisman strongly felt it is timely for the government to make some amendments in the History subject by adding additional elements on local history content.

By providing more information on local history content, he added the students would start to love the place and be more appreciative of what they have been enjoying all this while. Touching on the competition, he said he supported the organising of such meaningful event by Pustaka Miri in collaboration with Sarawak education office.

“I was informed that this competition is the 11th organised for this year. Kudos to Pustaka Miri as well as the state education office for providing the students a platform to take part in existing local culture and heritage preservation works.

“All the works which had been done by the students would be compiled for documentation purpose for future reference.”

He also suggested Pustaka Miri give specific research focus for Miri area such as Kampung Wireless and other places that are yet to be explored further.
