SIBU: National Association of Malaysian Life Insurance and Family Takaful Advisors ( Namlifa) Sibu branch will host ‘Insurance Awareness Torch Run – Run For Insurance 2018’ on Nov 25 in conjunction with World Insurance Awareness Day.

Assistant organising chairman Thomas Tiang said 2,000 participants are expected at the event to be held at Sibu Town Square at 6am.

“We appeal to the public to support the run by participating. We also welcome sponsorship towards this meaningful event. Part of the funds collected after deducting expenses shall be donated to needy charitable organisations,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Tiang said they have also sent out invitations to sports and recreational clubs, colleges, schools here to participate in the event.

He said during the launch of the nationwide event in Pulau Langkawi on Sept 4, Namlifa president Lim Kim Poi emphasised that the run was to create awareness amongst Malaysians on the importance of getting insurance coverage.

Lim had stated that the insurance penetration rate in Malaysia was only 56 per cent while Family Takaful’s trailed far behind at 14.8 per cent as of last year.

He said as an important stakeholder in the life insurance industry, Namlifa has taken the initiative to contribute positively to the nation’s economy, in tandem with the aspirations of Bank Negara Malaysia to pursue the goal of 75 per cent insurance coverage by the year 2020.

Lim added that half of the Malaysian population are moving around each day without any insurance coverage or risk management knowledge.

“Any emergency arising due to death, disability or loss of working capability will result in severe financial losses for families, leading to social problems for the country,” he said.

Tiang said all 12 Namlifa branches nationwide will come forward to host this event to increase public awareness on the need for insurance protection.
