KAPIT: People from all levels of society are told to always uphold integrity to avoid corruption.

The advice came from Datuk Talib Zulpilip, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office ( Integrity and Ombudsman), when officiating at the closing of the ‘ Program Integriti: Pemimpin Bersama Masyarakat Siri 7/2018’ here which was attended by heads of departments, government agencies, community leaders and leaders of non-governmental organisations in Kapit District.

“Integrity is choosing your thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gains. Integrity is not just applicable to civil servants but each and every one of us in society.

“Eradicating corruption is a collective responsibility of all. When there is integrity there is less corruption,” he reminded.

He cited the action against illegal logging as an example.

“Information must be shared. So it is important for longhouse chiefs and villagers to report to the relevant authorities if they come across incidents of illegal logging so that swift action can be taken and bring the culprits to face the law,” he said.

Integrity is choosing your thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gains. Integrity is not just applicable to civil servants but each and every one of us in society.

On a related matter, Talib affirmed that the Sarawak government was committed to lead in the development of the state.

“Numerous objectives, programmes and initiatives have been and will be formulated to achieve this. However, the government is fully aware that the achievement of this goal lies on the delivery capability of the state government.”

He explained that good governance is an important factor that contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery system.

According to him, governance is made of human governance (values such as integrity, ethics, discipline, etc) and corporate governance ( laws, rules and regulations, processes and concepts, etc).

“Essentially human governance is principle-based, as opposed to corporate governance which is rule-based.”

He also said good governance is one of the essential principles for development.

“It is all about doing things right. When good governance exists, orderliness prevails. There is a high degree of right attitude, right behaviour, right decisions and right actions. Mistakes, either deliberate or non- deliberate, are minimised when a state of orderliness prevails. This applies to all individuals, corporations, organisations and political parties.

“These are some governance issues that need to be dealt with as fast as possible. The Ministry of Integrity and Ombudsman will be tasked to look at the various issues of governance as ongoing efforts.” Among those present were Integrity and Ombudsman Unit director Adana Jed, Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Kapit Deputy Resident Galong Luang, other heads of departments and community leaders.
