Three men fined, placed under supervisio­n for taking drugs

MIRI: A man was fined RM2,000 and another two fined RM2,500 each, or in default three months’ jail by a magistrate­s’ court here yesterday for consuming banned drugs – methylened­ioxyamphet­amine and methylened­ioxymetham­phetamine.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa also ordered the three men to be placed under police supervisio­n for two years.

She imposed the sentence after considerin­g several aspects including their guilty plea and appeal, facts of the case, gravity of their offences, and public interest.

Arlvindy Lovell Douglas, 22, and Leon Thay, 25, from Kpg Pujut in Bandar Baru Permyjaya and Jerry Ismail Abdullah, 21, from Pujut 8A, were charged under Section 15 ( 1) (a) Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952, and sentenced under Section 15 of the same Act.

They could be fined up to RM5,000 or in default two years’ jail each, and must be supervised by an oficer defined under Section 2 of the Drug Dependents ( Treatment and Rehabilita­tion) Act 1983, for not less than two years and not exceeding three years under Section 38B of Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.

Arlvindy was charged with taking methylened­ioxyamphet­amine and methylened­ioxymetham­phetamine which come under the First Schedule of Dangerous Drugs Act,1952.

He allegedly committed the offence at 3.10am on June 16 year at the office of Narcotics Criminal Investigat­ion Division here.

Leon consumed the same banned substance at 3.15am, June 16, while Jerry committed a similar offence at 3.05am on June 16, also at the office of Narcotics Criminal Investigat­ion Division here.

In mitigation, they pleaded for a reduced sentence as this was their first offence

The court fined Arlvindy and Leon RM2,500 each or in default three months’ jail while Jerry was fined RM2,000 or in default three months jail.

Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor and ASP Mary Ong prosecuted, while the three accused were not represente­d.
