Over 400 at Sarawak Deaf Schools Alumni reunion

-

KUCHING: A reunion of Sarawak Deaf Schools Alumni, organised by the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association ( SSDeaf), was held on Sept 29 at USCI hotel here in conjunction with the Deaf Awareness Month which falls in every September.

More than 400 people attended the reunion, including alumni and their family members.

Political secretary to the chief minister Tan Kai, representing Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, said he was honoured to be invited to the gathering as it gave him a special experience to be together with the hearing impaired, who formed about 90 per cent of the participants.

He hoped that all the alumni would take the gathering as a chance to meet and mingle with old friends and teachers and recall their old school days.

As the United Nations had declared Sept 23 as International Day of Sign Language, Tan also encouraged people to start to learn sign language as a show of solidarity and support to the hearing-impaired members of society.

According to the organising chairperson of the reunion, Nurmaliha Chai, the main objective of the reunion was to provide a platform for the alumni and teachers of schools for the deaf to meet and have a quality bonding time.

SSDeaf president Albert Wong informed that the organising team was made entirely of the hearingimpaired.

He congratulated the team for making this event successful and thanked everyone for their presence.

During the reunion, the association gave out donations to three schools of the deaf - SKPK ( P) Kota Samarahan, SKPK ( P) Miri and SKPK ( P) Sibu.
