Local movement to bring hip-hop excitement to Kuching end-October

-

KUCHING: Tha Project is taking everyone back to hip-hop with ‘ Tha Block Party’ – an event with roots in New York but with a twist of Sarawak culture.

Held in connection with What About Kuching ( WAK) 2018, Tha Block Party will take place behind Singgahsana Lodge on the H Playground, at Wayang Street here this Oct 20, running from noon to 6pm. Admission is free. The event is basically a crossculture event where Sarawak meets hip-hop.

There will be a remix culture of activities – ranging from performances by the deejays, breakers, emcees and graffiti writers, to ‘sape’ and ‘ kompang’ players – alongside booths where visitors can come to style their hair into dreadlocks and cornrows, get haircuts from the mini barber, get body painting, henna art and tattoos, as well as engage in skate jams.

There will also be folk games like ‘congkak’, ‘seremban’ and hopscotch, mini console games, food and beverages stalls selling items like ‘ais kacang’, a food truck and a BBQ – all set to complete a ‘real block party’.

Tha Project runs by the motto ‘All about Borneo Hip-Hop, From Tha Bottom To Tha Top’.

It is a movement that covers the five elements of hip- hop – deejaying, breaking, emceeing/ rapping, graffiti- making and art of beatbox – as well as some knowledge about the culture.
