Show proof projects cancelled Yong tells GPS reps

-

KUCHING: Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong urges Gabungan Parti Sarawak ( GPS) elected representatives to come forward with evidence to back their claims that infrastructure projects in their areas have been cancelled by the Pakatan Harapan ( PH) government.

GPS law makers should forward the evidence of the shelved projects to their counterparts in PH who would forward them to the relevant ministries or departments, she said.

“Otherwise, please stop making statements to tarnish the image or good deeds of the PH government,” said Yong at a press conference held at the DAP headquarters yesterday.

She added that the PH government unlike the previous administration practises good governance by being accountable and transparent and there is no room for ‘ hanky panky’ activities.

Yong was referring to a recent statement made by Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar claiming that funds for the state’s flood mitigation projects has been withdrawn by the federal government.

In 2015, an allocation of RM250 million was approved by the then BN federal government to implement the state’s f lood mitigation project.

In 2016, due to a major f lood in Kuching, a portion of the allocation ( RM150 million) was supposed to be channeled to the city for the project.

“Up until 2018, the fund he (Wan Junaidi) claimed is still not made available,” said Yong adding that Wan Junaidi is actually ignorant on the mechanism of the national budget.

According to her, despite the approval of the RM250 million in 2015, the amount had to be used within that period and could not be brought forward to 2016.

“If it ( allocation) was not utilised within the budgetary year, it is considered lapsed and cannot be brought forward,” she added.

The statements made by Wan Junaidi blaming the PH government for not giving the funds were misleading, she added.

The blame she said should go to the former BN government for not carrying out the f lood mitigation project in 2015 when the budget was approved.
