KAPIT: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports is urged to look into the apparent delay in works to upgrade the sports stadium here.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit said he will raise the matter with the ministry in the hope that a quick solution to the problem can be found.

“I am deeply concerned by the delay to improve and upgrade this sports stadium. I urge the contractor to act fast as the people of Kapit are now deprived of a proper sports facility.

“I will raise it ( delay) with the minister-in- charge to have this issue resolved as quickly as possible,” he said during a visit to the facility yesterday morning after members of the public voiced their concern on the delay to him.

previously raised the need to build a second sports field here during the State Legislative Assembly sitting, saying Kapit is short on sports facilities to cater to its growing population.

“When this sports field closed down (for upgrading), the people here have not had a place to relax or exercise after work. We need at least two sports fields because if you come here in the afternoon, there are hundreds of people exercising at this facility,” he added.

The original timetable for upgrading works was set from March 9 to Dec 9 this year.

Since June however, things appeared to have grinded to a halt, with workers and their machineries nowhere to be seen.

During his visit yesterday, Jamit said he spoke with ministry staff at the stadium to fi nd out the cause of the delay, and was told it was due to problems between the main contractor and subcontractor.

“I was told the sub- contractor has left the project, which resulted in the delay beginning in June. The main contractor is currently in the process of appointing a new sub- contractor to resume works, although no one seems certain as to when that would happen,” he said.
