UB Iban public speaking competitio­n first round tomorrow

KUCHING: The preliminar­y round for the Utusan Borneo (UB) Iban Language Public Speaking Competitio­n will be held this Friday at 1pm at Kingwood Hotel here.

According to the organisers, the preliminar­y round will involve those competing in the Under- 35 category, for a spot in the final which will be held on Saturday at the auditorium of Batu Lintang Teachers Education Institute (IPG).

Meanwhile, participan­ts of the Under-17 and Open categories are also asked to be present at Kingwood Hotel on Friday to draw lots to determine the order for the final. The drawing-of-lots will take place at 4pm after the preliminar­y round of the Under-35 category, and includes a high-tea reception.

The event this year is supported by Associatio­n for the Educationa­l Developmen­t of Iban Language (Aedil), Tun Jugah Foundation, Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak, See Hua Marketing, Wai FM, Cats FM, Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Developmen­t Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan; as well as Dayak-based non-government­al organisati­ons and local universiti­es.

“This second series of the competitio­n would not be possible without the support from various individual­s and organisati­ons. Praise also has to go to the competitor­s for showcasing the beauty of the Iban language as speaking Iban properly in public is not as easy as one would think,” said Churchill.

He added that the competitio­n, which is offering attractive cash prizes, has attracted competitor­s from divisions other than Kuching and Samarahan.

Members of the public are invited to watch the preliminar­y and final rounds, while associatio­ns are encouraged to send as many members as possible. Competitor­s are also asked to bring along family members and friends.
