Power supply to illegal gambling outlets cut off
KUCHING: Electricity supply to 55 illegal gambling premises has been disconnected as an approach to stop them from operating.
Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Azman Yusof said it is within the law that the police gave orders to Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to disconnect the electricity supply to these premises.
“Despite the actions (raids) of the police on these premises, the operators were still stubborn by using the same premises to conduct their illegal activities,” Azman told a press conference after the closing of the General Operations Force (PGA) basic training course at Pulapol Kuching yesterday.
He added that once electricity to these premises is disconnected, the operators would not be able to power-up their equipment such as computers as well as other electrical appliances in the premises.
“I would also like to express my gratitude to SEB for working together with the police to combat these illegal gambling activities in the state,” he added.
On another note, he pointed out that it is vital that the number of PGA personnel in Sarawak and Sabah be increased to beef up safety along the Malaysian borders.
“I think border safety is something that needs to be looked at seriously. We have to strategise our border’s safety especially against militant groups,” he

said.
He added the Sarawak police are consistently on alert against any encroachments by militant groups or movements along the borders.
“So far, there are no signs or information regarding the movement of militants going in or out through our borders,” he added.
He noted that the role of PGA in assisting the police along the borders had brought positive results, as they ( PGA) had managed to deter contrabands and illegal immigrants from entering Sarawak.
Touching on the course yesterday, Azman said a total of 168 PGA personnel had completed their training that was held for three months.
Among the courses they were taught, he added, was public order that was demonstrated during the closing ceremony yesterday.
Also present at the ceremony yesterday were Pulapol Kuching commandant SAC Datuk Azman Salim and other officers from the Sarawak police contingent and Bukit Aman.
