SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) should aim at becoming elite and a world class university on the basis of its learning, digesting, captivating and re-innovating in line with Malaysian culture, social and economic development needs.

In stating this, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is also UCTS chancellor, said UCTS Board of Directors should define the mission of the university as serving truth and justice, serving nations as societies with the demandoriented, problem- oriented and future oriented strategy.

“UCTS should establish a number of interdisciplinary cross industry collaborative research centres which offer undergraduate, master and doctorate education and research programmes.

“Only then can the students achieve a new model of learning and integration of talent cultivation, research social service, cultural inheritance and innovation,” he said after he presented scrolls to a total of 262 graduates at UCTS 3rd convocation ceremony yesterday.

He expressed confidence that UCTS would demonstrate a unique education characteristic among world university communities with support from the Sarawak government through the efforts of faculties and students.

“Build its own academic strength and form its own character. I call on the university to continue to enhance international teaching which provides students with cross boundary learning experience and filtrate opportunities.

“Students will be engrossed and will grow in different cultural and social environment.

“This experience will equip them with greater international perspective. Students can develop their career with stronger global competency.

“Our target should be to cultivate global citizens who take roots in their own national culture,” he said.
