Prepare for the wet season, Baram folk reminded

-

MIRI: Upper Baram folk especially those in Tinjar, Tutoh and Apoh, are reminded to prepare for the coming wet season as predicted by the Department of Meteorology.

The weather patent can be predicted with the availablility of modern technologies, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau when reminding people in his constituency of the impending bad weather.

“The prediction also allows us ample time to prepare, and hopefully we can avoid the loss of properties and lives.

“In past years due to our unpreparedness, there were cases of people badly affected by flood, their hard- earned properties damaged or gone.

“Experience should teach us to be wise, and not take the weather for granted,” said Dennis when contacted yesterday.

He also urged headmen in the area to form committees to keep eyes on the water level to ensure the residents were kept alert at all times.

“It is predicted that the coming months would the extraordinarilly wet for Baram.”

Dennis also reminded drivers and other road users who have to travel along flooded logging roads to take extra care as flood waters could damage the dirt road, and wash away wooden bridges.

He hoped that the Welfare Department here and in Marudi would ensure that their forward bases are well stocked with food in the event of a prolonged flood.

The forward bases in Telang Usan are at Long Bemang for Apoh region, and at Long Loyang for Ulu Tinjar region. Based on past floods, there may be a need to set up additional forward bases in Long Sobeng and Long Watt, Dennis said.
