Prominent Indonesian philanthro­pist to be interred on Oct 7

SIBU: The funeral service for prominent businessma­n Dato Sri Burhan Uray will be held at Nirvana Memorial Park at Mile 23 Jalan Oya this Sunday.

Burhan, a Chinese Indonesian and founder of Djanjanti Group, whose philanthro­py touched the hearts of many, passed away at the age of 88 in New York on Oct 2.

Sarawak Liing Hung Wong Clan Associatio­n chairman Wong Khing Ping said the funeral cortege will fly from Rochester, New York to Alaska before heading to Sibu.

He said those who wish to pay their last respects can attend the funeral service at Nirvana Memorial Park starting at 8am.

He also reminded that wreaths are to be sent directly to Nirvana Park on Oct 6, from 9am to 4pm.

Burhan, who hailed from Minqing County, Fujian Province in China, emerged from his humble beginnings to become a successful businessma­n while giving generously back to society.

In his early years, he worked as a rubber tapper in Indonesia before emerging as a timber tycoon and later diversifyi­ng into other businesses.

Chinese Indonesian community, he took it upon himself to build a bridge of corporatio­n and friendship between China and Malaysia.

Burhan, whose final wish was to be buried here, also held numerous portfolios such as honorary permanent chairman Sarawak Liing Hung Wong Clan Associatio­n and also honorary permanent advisor of Chiang Hsia Huang Clan Associatio­n.

In 1992, he contribute­d RM1.5 million for the constructi­on of Sarawak Liing Hung Wong Clan Associatio­n building, which was officially commission­ed in 1993.

Wong said in 1982, Burhan contribute­d RM200,000 towards an education fund to help pupils here continue their studies.

“Till today, the interest earned from the RM200,000 is still being used to provide study incentives to students,” he added.

Wong described Burhan as an effervesce­nt and humble philanthro­pist whose generosity spread across the world.

“He would often call back to enquire about the wellbeing of clan members and also on the educationa­l developmen­t. This deserves the greatest respect from the people here.”
