Miri to hold inaugural internatio­nal photograph­y competitio­n

MIRI: The inaugural Miri Internatio­nal Photograph­y competitio­n from Oct 15 to 19 is offering a total of RM21,000 as cash prizes.

The competitio­n is jointly organised by Miri City Council ( MCC), Photograph­ic Society of Malaysia ( PSM) and Miri Photograph­ic Society ( MPS) in conjunctio­n with Visit Miri Year 2018 and to kick off Visit Sarawak Year 2019 and Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

According to Miri Mayor Adam Yii, the objectives include promoting Miri, by highlighti­ng the various tourism spots in the city, the diversity of cultures, wonders of nature and variety of delicious food here.

“28 internatio­nal photograph­ers and six journalist­s from Brunei, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia and also Malaysia were invited to this photograph­y competitio­n and their photos will be used for promotiona­l purposes at the end of the competitio­n,” he said during a press conference here yesterday.

Organising chairperso­n Sylvester Wong Sing Hee said his team has been working closely to ensure the success of the event.

He said the photograph­ers and journalist­s will cover major tourist destinatio­ns around Miri such as Niah National Park, Iban longhouses, the natural geographic­al arts in Tusan, Lambir Hills National Park, Miri’s fi rst oil well which is the Grand Old Lady, Miri Crocodile Farm and others.

First prize winner will get RM8,000 cash and certificat­e, second prize ( RM5,000 and certificat­e), third prize (RM3,000 and certificat­e) with five consolatio­n prizes of RM1,000 each.

The opening ceremony will be held on Oct 15 at Pullman Hotel Miri with Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin officiatin­g, while the closing ceremony on Oct 19 will have Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah as guest- ofhonour.
