Pay frequent visits to old folks home, people urged

MIRI: Today’s community should uphold the spirit of filial piety and one way to do this is by visiting residents of the old folks homes frequently.

In making this call, Miri MP Dr Michael Teo says the senior citizens staying in these homes also have the right to enjoy respect and happiness.

“I encourage everyone to visit the elderly folk here any time, not only during festive seasons because many residents have no family,” the parliament­arian said during his visit to Miri Home for The Aged, also known as Krokop Old Folks Home, where he distribute­d mooncakes and ‘ angpow’ to the residents there.

of the initiative­s to care for senior citizens who have been abandoned, its role is not only limited to providing a shelter for them, but also as a temporary placement to avoid any unwanted occurrence befalling the senior citizens.

He said good family values, especially filial piety, should be instilled in the younger generation from a very young age.

Commenting on the facilities at the Krokop Old Folks Home, Dr Teo described them as ‘satisfacto­ry’ and in this respect, he pledge to continue supporting the centre.

“I am satisfied with the overall ( facilities) of this place. I understand that the centre also receives donations and contributi­ons from the public.

“Government doctors usually come to this place every month to check on the residents’ health and well- being,” he noted.

The Krokop Old Folks Home has been in operation for more than 40 years.

Currently, it houses 26 senior citizens, including two who are bedridden.
