Village, community leaders on learning trip to model longhouse

KAPIT: Village and community leaders from throughout Sarawak on a three- day visit to Kapit District and Rumah Benggau Andal, Nanga Sut in Baleh were reminded to implement what they had learnt, seen and heard when they return to their respective districts, villages and longhouses.

Rumah Benggau Andal was adjudged the national champion in the ‘Anugerah Desa Perdana’ 2017.

Officiatin­g at the start of ‘ Lawatan Kerja Transforma­si Luar Bandar Bersama Rombongan Ketua Masyarakat, Ketua Kaum’ at the longhouse yesterday, Deputy State Secretary Datu Jaul Samion told them that they should not take the visit as a pleasure trip but as a time for them to learn what made Rumah Benggau Andal stands out among others.

The visit to the longhouse was to study the success story of the longhouse.

“There are many successful longhouses throughout the state. But why Rumah Benggau could emerge the champion. There must be something we can learn from them. We want to learn from their module and I hope when you return to your respective districts, longhouses and villages, you try to make a change for the better based on what you have learnt and experience­d through sharing at Rumah Benggau,” Jaul reminded.

He said among the participan­ts were Deputy Residents, district officers, administra­tive officers, Temenggong, Pemanca and Penghulu from all the divisions in Sarawak.

from this Rumah Benggau. I am in charge of rural transforma­tion. It is my hope that after this learning visit, in the near future, each division and district will come up with many successful longhouses like Rumah Benggau.”

Jaul pointed out that among the things that lead to success are quality leadership, children’s education, entreprene­urship, commercial agricultur­e, discipline, skills and knowledge.

Pelagus assemblyma­n Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Tuai Rumah Benggau spoke at the function earlier.

Nyabong welcomed the participan­ts to Rumah Benggau and thanked Jaul for selecting Rumah Benggau as their case study.

Among those joining the visit were Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong, Kapit district officer Elvis Didit, Sarikei Deputy Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan, Samarahan Deputy Resident Richard Michael, Selangau district officer Inting Nyami, Tebedu district officer Joseph Liew and Kapit OCPD DSP Freddy Bian.

Today, the participan­ts will visit Terasang Market to observe how Dayak traders do business, pay a courtesy call on the Kapit Resident and attend a briefing on developmen­t in Kapit Division.
