Cop among five men held for robbing foreign workers

-

IPOH: Perak police arrested five men including a policeman who impersonated police personnel to carry out criminal activities in three separate raids around Ipoh.

Perak Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Yahya Abdul Rahman said the suspects, aged between 19 and 23, were arrested on Oct 2, 3 and 6.

He said the modus operandi of the suspects was to impersonate police officers and check hostels or houses that were occupied by foreign workers..

“They (suspects) would wear police vests, check the identities of the foreign workers, then demand money by force and seize their valuable items such as mobile phones.

“With the arrest of five members of the group, the police have successfully completed their investigations into nine robberies in Ipoh and its surrounding areas this year,” he told a press conference at the Perak Police Headquarters here yesterday.

Yahya said following the raids, two men were also arrested for buying stolen phones while a woman was detained for selling the stolen items.

In a separate case, Yahya said two 18-year-olds known as “Geng Mirul LS” were detained for being allegedly involved in 40 motorcycle thefts last month.

He said the two suspects, who were unemployed, were detained in Taman Bercham Raya here on Oct 7.

Meanwhile, Yahya said the police also detained three individuals including a woman believed to be involved in the murder of a man found floating in a mine at Jalan Kuari Tanjung Batu, Pantai Remis, last Wednesday.

He said the 27-year old woman and two men aged 30 and 44, were detained in separate raids last night in the Manjung area. Initial investigations revealed that the victim was believed to have been stabbed after a dispute over the payment of drugs, he added. — Bernama
