KUCHING: The federal government plans on opening paths for Technical and Vocational Education Training ( TVET) diploma holders to pursue their degree under the Malaysia Technical University Network ( MTUN).

This is one of the ways the government aims to empower the TVET field, said Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director- general Prof Dato Dr Mohd Ismail Abd Aziz.

“As long as they meet the requirements, diploma holders from TVET institutes should be able to enter MTUN not long from now,” he said, adding that the Education Minister will announce the full details soon.

MTUN is made up of four technical universities – Universiti Malaysia Perlis ( UniMAP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang ( UMP), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka ( UTeM), and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia ( UTHM).

Mohd Ismail was speaking to reporters after officiating the Sarawak Zone Town Hall Session for TVET Empowerment at Mara Skills Institute here yesterday.

The town hall was organised to enable the department to hear from young people about their expectations of the TVET field in the country.

In his speech, Mohd Ismail said the federal government aims to bring TVET into the mainstream.

“Not only is it a channel to process and produce skilled local workers, it is also an engine for the development of the country. It allows every layer of society a chance for balanced development, reduce poverty and lead us to economic prosperity.”

He added that Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik has announced the formation of the ministry’s TVET Committee on June 12, which will be chaired by Permatang Pauh assemblywoman Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Also present at the event were Kuching Polytechnic director Kamaludin Daud, Human Resource Department deputy director- general Zaihan Shukri, Mara Sarawak director Dr Azmi Amat Murjan, and Mara Skills Institute Kuching director Mohd Yatim Hassan.
