Kuching set for direct flights to Bangkok, Jakarta, says Abang Johari
KUCHING: The city is set to become a hub for low- cost flights, with talks currently taking place for direct flights to Bangkok and Jakarta.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who revealed this, said the Sarawak government is now in the final stages of discussion with national low- cost carrier AirAsia.
“When this becomes a reality, it will enable tourists or visitors to not only visit Kuching, but the whole of Sarawak.
“We can achieve it because we have many national parks and ecotourism attractions that centre on culture and the environment,” he said during the launching of Darul Hana Musical Fountain on Sunday night.
The musical fountain – the city’s newest attraction – was launched by Yang di- Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in conjunction with his 82nd birthday celebration.
Abang Johari added that the Sarawak government will continue to upgrade and enhance tourist attractions in the city, and pointed to works to build a cascading waterfall and tea house near Fort Margherita as well as upgrading of Brooke Dockyard as examples.
Apart from that, he said efforts are being made to develop Kuching into a heritage city.
“At the moment, the Sarawak government is also constructing a floating mosque at the Kuching Waterfront, which will be another tourist attraction in the city, as well as developing the Sarawak Museum Campus.
“This is our approach to make Kuching the most beautiful city in Sarawak and become a tourist attraction. This requires strong unity among the people, especially when it comes to developing the services and tourism sector.”
