MQA received 615 DVM programmes for accreditation since June 2016

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Qualifications Agency ( MQA) received 615 Diploma Vokasional Malaysia ( Malaysian Vocational Diploma) ( DVM) programmes from vocational colleges ( KV) for accreditation assessment since June 2016.

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching said of these, 510 programmes or 83 per cent had been accorded temporary accreditation.

“A total of 428 programmes have been accepted for accreditation assessment with 12 DVM programmes by KVs getting full accreditation while 54 programmes are in the process of meeting the requirements for full accreditation.

“Another 362 programmes are in the process of assessment and must fulfil the requirements to get full accreditation by mid 2019,” she said at the Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday.

Teo was replying to a question from Nurul Izzah Anwar ( PH- Permatang Pauh) on the statistics for student intake into KVs since 2013 until now, and the ministry’s target to resolve the issue of accreditation of KV graduates with the MQA.

On student enrolment into KV programmes, she said 15,916 students registered for these programmes in 2013, 2014 (18,022), 2015 (17,544), 2016 (12,875), 2017 (16,728) and 2018 (14,243).

Teo said DVM graduates could continue their studies to the degree level in public and private tertiary institutions.

She added that the ministry will also discuss with the Public Service Department ( PSD) to allow more DVM holders to join the public sector.

“It is true that we have a problem of DVM holders not getting jobs with the government because the DVMs do not get full accreditation. Actually, the SVM (vocational certificates) are on par with SPM, through the SVM we can adjust the conditions so that students can use the SVM and do not need three SPM credits to work with the government.” — Bernama
