Re-imagine the future at ongoing cardboard challenge

KUCHING: In conjunctio­n with World Architectu­re Day 2018 and Global Cardboard Challenge 2018, Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia Sarawak Chapter ( PAMSC) and INTODESIGN Lab are organising the Cardboard City Challenge for the second time, with the theme ‘ Reimaginin­g the Future’.

Event organising chairman Ar Chai Si Yong from PAMSC said they had been celebratin­g World Architectu­re Day – which falls on the first Monday of October, for the past seven years.

“Last year, the event was a success with 1,800 people from the public turning up during the last two days of ‘ The Cardboard Play Day’.

“Receiving positive feedback from the public, we decided to invite more participan­ts and have more attractive programmes this year. We even produced a short film conveying the message on how important creativity is for the younger generation and that it has no limits,” he said.

Chai added the event aims to teach everyone about the importance of design in their lives and how constructi­ng play could instil creativity in children.

The four- day installati­on started yesterday and will run until Oct 19 at Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Negeri Sarawak.

Three-hundred primary school students are participat­ing in designing and constructi­ng their imagined future city with used cardboard, while around 180 college and university students are volunteeri­ng in the Cardboard City Challenge for the children.

Adding to the event is The Cardboard Pavilion Competitio­n.

of 2.4m x 2.4m in the Cardboard City.

The Play Day will be held from Oct 20-21 from 10am to 6pm, and is open to public. Entry is free.

A full list of programmes such as cardboard workshop, art and craft session, storytelli­ng, traffic games, environmen­tal awareness roadshow and more will fill up these two days of interactiv­e family events.

Members of the public can even bring their own DIY cardboard toy to join the Play Day. Do check out impromptu children art exhibition and creative art lesson held in the cardboard pavilions.

Lam Choi Suan from INTODESIGN Lab said that they are showcasing a spectacula­r cardboard installati­on of Internatio­nal Space Station ( ISS) and robot to match the theme of Re-imagining the Future.

“We hope to present another fun, playful and inspiring big scale toy event,” she said.

PAMSC, meanwhile, conveyed their appreciati­on to event collaborat­ors What About Kuching ( WAK), University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS), University Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas), Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology (LICT), SEGi College Sarawak, as well as sponsors Smooth Korean Autoparts Sdn Bhd, Asteel Sdn Bhd, and Mapei Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
