Five Welfare Dept centres jointly run social programme

BINTANGOR: A recent joint programme involving five community centres under Sarikei Division Welfare Department served to raise public awareness of their responsibi­lity in caring for the welfare and wellbeing of their fellow Sarawakian­s.

Representa­tives of Sarikei Division Welfare Volunteers Organisati­on, the communityb­ased rehabilita­tion centres ( PDKs) of Sarikei and Bintangor, as well as the senior citizens activity centres ( PAWEs) of Sarikei and Bintangor, gathered at Rumah Senin in Sungai Gemuan near here to run various activities lined up under the programme.

According to a spokespers­on, the event also meant to provide a platform for the local volunteers to assist those in need.

“It is hoped that this programme would help create a caring society and also to strengthen the relationsh­ip between the old and the younger generation­s,” said the spokespers­on.

The event hosted some 300 people, the majority of whom were the villagers of Rumah Senin, who take part in activities such as a talk on ‘Fire Insurance’ by a representa­tive of Allianz General Insurance Company, a session on ‘Basic Safety Tips’ which also included safety demonstrat­ions by a member of the Civil Defence Force, as well as a mass aerobics exercise.

Meradong assemblyma­n Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing was present at the closing ceremony, where he was accompanie­d by the acting Sarawak Welfare Department director Irine Andrew Ganggang and longhouse chieftain Senin Ambu.
