LIMBANG: The Meritam volcanic mud festival ( Pesta Lumpur Berbuak) to be held for the third time on November 10 and 11 at Kampung Meritam here is expected to attract over 5000 local and international visitors .

Walikota Limbang District Council ( MDL) Sufian Mohat said after the success of the festival last year, the Meritam Volcanic mud Festival was listed as one of the main events in the District Council’s Tourism Calendar.

Sufian added that more events will be introduced to make the festival more attractive to visitors.

Over 20 activities such as buffalo taxis, tug- of-war, flying foxes, stalls, telematches and Mr. Lumpur Berbuak will be held during the two day festival.

In the last 10 years MDL had spent some RM4.3 million to upgrade and maintain facilities at the site of the ‘Bebuak Festival” he said at media conference at the council’s office yesterday.

Also present were MDL Acting Secretary Mohammad Syamil Jumain, Chairman of the MDL Social Education and Tourism Development Committee Safiah Abu Bakar, Meritam Village Headman Mahmud Gampal and other government departments’ heads.

Sufian disclosed that so far facilities at 65 percent of the main tourist destinations here have been upgraded or restored.

“At the moment the Lumpur Bebuak venue has basic amenities such as toilets, public bathrooms and wooden bridges for visitors.”

According to him, abandoned tourist destinations which had been restored are attracting foreign tourists, including those from Europe , Brunei and Sabah.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail is expected to officiate at the opening on November 10.
