KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat yesterday afternoon inspected the landslide site at Taman Thiam Chiong, Jalan Padang Sukan here.

He was accompanied by Kapit district officer Elvis Didit, who is the chairman of Kapit District Disaster Management Committee, Kapit District Office administrative officer Mohd Shukri, Special Branch officer ASP Chua Su Hua, Kapit MP representative Ambrose Abong Bugek, Pemanca Yong Thu Fook and Penghulu Wong Kie Ing.

Jamit and his delegation were briefed on the landslide which happened at the backyard of a house by its owner, who recalled that she had many sleepless nights over the past one month whenever heavy rains occurred.

As a result of the soil erosion, she said one of the beams of her house was hanging without any support as the soil beneath it was washed down by the running water, and the house had been declared as unsafe.

She thanked Jamit for answering their request to build a retention wall at the riverbank which they hoped would put an end to the soil erosion.

“I hope the Kapit District Council will speed up the construction of the retaining wall,” she said.

In response, Jamit told her that it would take time to prepare the document listing up the specifications and scope of work to the done.

“Meanwhile, I have instructed a contractor to construct a temporary drain to discharge the water from the housing estates, which we hope will prevent further erosion while waiting for the contractor to start work on the retaining wall,” he said.
