SIBU: The Harmoni Uptown Market in Awang Ramli Amit Road here has 10 vacant stalls for rent, according to Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.

He said seven of the stalls are reserved for non-Bumiputeras.

“Altogether we’ve 52 stalls there,” Tiong said.

Adding that the market is managed by the council, he said 29 of the stalls had been taken up by Bumipuetra traders, seven by non-Bumiputera traders, one by a handicraft vendor and five were put under KIV (keep in view), while 10 more were available for rent.

Application forms to rent the stalls are available at UTC counter upon payment of RM1 for each form.

“Harmoni Uptown Market is set up to spruce up the ambience at Taman Selera Harmoni Food Court. This is to complement the existing hawkers at the food court by luring more visitors and customers to the place,” Tiong told a monthly meeting of the council yesterday.

According to him, no cooking is allowed at Harmoni Uptown Market.

“Traders can only sell items like clothing, home-baked cakes, biscuits, merchandised goods, promotional IT goods, handicrafts, electrical appliances, utensils, souvenirs and so on.”

Trading hours are from 5 till 10pm or until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“It’s similar to a ‘pasar malam’ though the set- up is better organised.”

On a separate matter, Tiong reminded the public to refrain from carrying out illegal extension to their buildings which is an offence under Section 8 (1) & (2) of the Sarawak Building Ordinance, 1994 under which an offender could be fined from RM1,000 to RM2,000.

“Approval for extension or renovation can’t be granted retrospectively.

“For works without approval that have been completed, the council will issue notice, giving the owner 30 days to show cause,” he warned.
