SEB aims to raise standard on safety aspect
MIRI: Sarawak Energy Berhad ( SEB) aimed to raise its standard on safety aspect when carrying out major projects as it sought to meet the energy demand for Sarawak and beyond.
Group CEO Datu Sharbini Suhaili said this during the corporation’s annual Health, Safety and Environment ( HSE) Week here on Tuesday which saw the participation of the top management here and other regional groups in effort to renew the organisation’s commitment to safety.
He stressed that safety was critical as the organisation moved towards meeting the energy demand for Sarawak and beyond with major works that include the 1,285MW Baleh hydroelectric project and the planned extension of the transmission grid into the northern region of Sarawak.
“Safety must always be our number one priority as we embark on projects that will see up to thousands of people working together at our project sites such as during the peak of our Baleh Hydroelectric project construction,” he added.
“The theme for 2018 is ‘raising standards, nurturing culture, saving lives’ and embedding these values in the organisation and with full compliance to the organisation’s Life Saving Rules to move up the safety culture ladder and achieve a proactive and generative safety culture in the organisation,” Sharbini said.
The organisation’s recent safety achievement was the 275kV Balingian- Selangau Transmission Line project which saw zero recordable incidents during the projects despite an extended completion time as a result of land-related issues.
“Our Life Saving Rules – mandatory rules governing how we work – are being communicated to our 5,000 employees across our businesses and locations. There will be strong consequences for employees or contractors who choose not to observe the rules, ” he said.
The event was also attended by Sarawak Energy’s senior management team including Marconi Madai, group vice president for health safety security and environment; Pramod Kumar, executive vice president for project execution; Haji Yusri Safri, vice president for retail; and Polycarp Wong, vice president for hydroas well as representatives from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health ( DOSH), Department of Environment ( DOE), Royal Malaysia Police and other agencies.
Activities and games organised in conjunction with HSE week include fire-fighting, first aid and CPR, and safety quizzes.
Speaking at the prize- giving ceremony, Marconi said instilling a strong safety culture within the organisation, starting from the individual, was needed to achieve zero work- related fatalities and serious injuries.
